U.S. President George W. Bush will meet his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev in Japan next week, their first meeting since the latter became head of state in May, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Thursday.
The forthcoming talks between Bush and Medvedev are expected to be held on Monday in a hotel in the resort of Toyako, Japan, where they will attend the Group of Eight (G8) summit scheduled for July 7-9.
The scheduled U.S.-Russian summit is expected to focus on a broad range of issues of mutual concern, including the strongly disputed U.S. missile shield plans.
The Bush administration plans to base radar units in the Czech Republic and 10 missile interceptors in Poland as part of its attempts to extend the missile defense system to Europe.
Russia strongly opposes the plan, saying it poses a threat to its security while the United States says the system is aimed at states and groups in the Middle East that are seeking weapons of mass destruction, and the planned missile shield does not target Russia.
