Mexican President Felipe Calderon and visiting U.S. Republican presidential hopeful John McCain discussed issues of bilateral interest such as trade, immigration and border security in a meeting here Thursday.
"No matter who is elected (the next U.S. president), he will have the cooperation of Mexico for the development of a more prosperous and competitive region," Calderon said at the meeting.
Mexico respects the decision of the people of the United States, he added.
Calderon said he is closely following the U.S. electoral process, as well as the proposals and actions of the presidential candidates.
McCain hailed the importance of the cooperation between the two countries in boosting prosperity and security in North America, and added that one of his priorities was to strengthen closer ties with Mexico.
McCain also hailed the long history shared by both countries and the enormous contributions made by Mexicans in the U.S. in the economic, cultural and social spheres.
He also acknowledged Calderon's leadership of the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking in the region.
McCain reaffirmed his support to bilateral trade ties under the North America Free Trade Agreement and to the efforts of either country to resolve the security issues affecting their common border.
