Toncontin international airport in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa reopened Saturday, six weeks after a deadly air crash killing five people, according to news reaching here.
The airport was closed to all but domestic flights after a Salvadoran airplane carrying 124 passengers skidded off the runway and careered onto a street killing five people and injuring 65 others in bad weather on May 30.
After the crash, international fights were redirected to San Pedro Sula, 161 km from Tegucigalpa.
Honduran President Manuel Zelaya announced the reopening of the airport at a news conference after meeting with businessmen, who demanded the resumption of flights at Toncontin.
"The doors to Toncontin are open as of right now," said Zelaya.
Zelaya also said a new international airport for the capital is being built and expected to be finished next year.
There have been calls to replace aging Toncontin airport as it is difficult for large planes to land there due to its short and narrow runways.
