Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa appointed Wilma Salgado as finance minister Tuesday, to replace Fausto Ortiz, who resigned amid disagreements with Correa on the closure of two private TV stations and one radio station.
The two TV stations were Gamavision Television and TC Television. Both are linked to the Isaias Group, whose bankruptcy in 1998 left a debt of 661 million U.S. dollars.
The Agency of Deposits Guarantee (AGD) Tuesday seized the two TV stations along with other 193 enterprises in relation to the dispute over the company debts.
The workers of the stations were worried about the interruption of transmission signals.
Salgado, manager of AGD, said the seizing of the assets was aimed at recovering resources that belong to Ecuadorians.
Correa said the government would auction the seized goods. "The government expects to auction the goods as fast as possible and compensate the Ecuadorians."
Police Monday also closed down Radio Sucre radio station.
Salgado last week was granted amnesty from the Constituent Assembly after spending eight months as a refugee in the facilities of the Andean University of Simon Bolivar. She had been accused of misusing public funds.
Salgado said Monday she had not abandoned the right to file a claim against the State for moral damage. She said the Treasury Inspector's Office, the Prosecutor's Office and the Court of Justice of Quito pursued her when they initiated a peculation process against her.
