A senior U.S. official said Wednesday that diplomatic options have not been exhausted on Iran and force will be the last resort.
"We do not believe we have exhausted all the diplomatic possibilities," U.S. Under Secretary of State for political affairs William Burns said during a hearing held at the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.
"We view force as an option that is on the table but a last resort," Burns said.
U.S. President George W. Bush has said that in terms of Iran's nuclear issue, all options are on the table. However, the United States prefers diplomacy at the moment.
Iran has said it is seriously studying the nuclear offer provided to it by the P5+1, or the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany.
The United States has accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program. However, Iran has insisted its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
