An armed group killed 16 people, including a police chief, in shootouts across Mexico, officials said Thursday.

The victims were killed in drug-related violence.

In the northwestern city of Culiacan, three victims were killed on the street and six others inside an auto repair shop, local police said.

In another attack at almost the same time in Culiacan, a police officer was gunned down outside the local police station, and another policeman was killed when chasing the gunmen.

"There were two different incidents but they happened within three minutes of each other," a police spokeswoman said.

In the northern state of Chihuahua, a state police chief was killed by gunmen, local attorney general's office said.

Four more men were shot dead in Guadalupe, Calvo and Juarez, the Chihuahua state officials said.

Mexico has witnessed a bloody drug war since the government began a crackdown on traffickers in December 2006. Drug runners and organized crime syndicates have repeatedly clashed with Mexican military forces, killing at least 1,880 people so far this year.

Several top ranking federal police personnel have also been murdered by hitmen hired by drug cartels in recent weeks.

The U.S. Congress has agreed to provide Mexico with equipment and training under the Merida Plan on anti-drug cooperation between the two nations.
