U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is likely to be the primary sponsor on a car of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing in a race due in early next month, according to a news report on Friday.
The report by the CNN affiliated Sports Illustrated said that Obama's campaign was in talks with BAM Racing to sponsor its No. 49 Sprint Cup car for the Pocono race in Pennsylvania on Aug. 3 but details could only be made public several days later.
Citing a BAM spokesperson, the report said that the team would hold a press conference on July 23 in Miami to announce the partnership and Obama would be at present.
The two sides were currently discussing a one-race deal with an option to continue, he added.
If the deal is reached, Obama will become the first U.S. major presidential candidate to sponsor a car in the NASCAR series.
The Illinois Senator would also attend a private fundraising event on July 30 in Miami, where BAM team owners Beth Ann and Tony Morgenthau, both Republicans, would allow him to deliver a speech about changes.
The report said that car racing sport "has typically shown itself to be a Republican stronghold, with many well-known NASCAR stars having stood behind Obama's Republican presidential rival, John McCain.
In primary season, Obama has shown his sport skills in Bowling and basketball to woo voters.
