Tropical storm Elida strengthened Monday to a hurricane, and it was moving away from the coasts of Mexico to the west in the Pacific Ocean, Mexico's National Meteorological Service said.
Elida, with a wind speed of 120 km per hour, was located some 512 km southwest of the state of Jalisco, the meteorological service said in a statement.
It was moving away to the west at a speed of some 26 km per hour but will still cause rainfalls in western Mexico, the service said.
The Civil Defense authorities said they will keep on alert along the coasts of the states of Jalisco, Colima and Michoacan as more rains and gales are still likely to come.
The authorities have also advised ships sailing along the west coast to take precautionary measures against strong breaking waves caused by the hurricane. Source:Xinhua
