At least 5,000 people were displaced as nine rivers overflowed in the province of Veracruz in east Mexico amid heavy rains, the Civil Protection Ministry said Wednesday.
They were evacuated after Panuco River, one of the most abundant in Mexico, overflowed during downpours brought by No. 13 tropical storm, it said.
The homeless people have been taken to 53 shelters in different places in northern Veracruz. Another 25,000 people would be evacuated in the coming hours, said the Ministry.
The rains also caused four landslides and many roads were blocked by stones and mud. Dozens of towns were affected and over half of the buildings at San Juan Evangelista, the town hardest hit, were submerged. Source:Xinhua
