Haiti's lower house of parliament approved Michele Pierre-Louis as prime minister on Thursday in a move toward ending a three-month political stalemate, said reports from the Haitian capital Port au Prince.
Pierre-Louis received a 61-1 vote in the Chamber of Deputies, with 20 abstentions.
The ratification still has to be passed by the Senate, which is expected to vote next week.
Former prime minister Jacques Edouard Alexis was forced to resign on April 12 amid riots over skyrocketing food prices.
Education professor and philanthropist Pierre-Louis, 61, is the third candidate President Rene Preval has presented to parliament for the job. The previous two were rejected.
