A House panel voted Wednesday to issue a contempt citation against Karl Rove, a top aide of President George W. Bush.
The 20-14 vote was cast along party lines and held Rove accountable of failing to testify in Congress on "politicization" within the Justice Department scheduled on July 10.
Democrats in the House Judiciary Committee had wanted to question him about his knowledge of the prosecution of former Alabama Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman, as well as the firing of nine U.S. attorneys back in 2006.
Rove has denied he has any involvement in the two cases.
The citation now goes to the whole floor of the House and if the whole House vote to convict Rove of contempt, he could face up to one year in jail.
However, pending presidential and congressional elections in November, the case could drag for a long time before getting solved.
