Visiting Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Monday called for the establishment of an alliance with Argentina and Brazil to boost regional integration.
Chavez made the call upon his arrival in this Argentine capital for a trilateral meeting with his Argentine and Brazilian counterparts Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The three countries, which enjoy the strongest economic power and influence in the South American region, should play more active roles in the regional integration process, said the Venezuelan leader.
The three leaders, in their meeting, agreed to boost their cooperation in transportation first, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry of Argentina.
They were weighing the creation of a regional airline and a railway linking the three countries, said the statement.
Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana said the three leaders will meet again in Brazil on Sept. 6 for discussions on cooperation in such fields as in energy and food.
