The United States said on Thursday it has suspended non-humanitarian aid to Mauritania after the legitimate government of the western African country was toppled in a military coup.

Apart from the continuation of 4.9 million U.S. dollars in food aid, the United States is stopping 15 million dollars in military-to-military cooperation, more than 4 million dollars in peacekeeping training, 3 million dollars in developmental assistance, and 805,000 dollars in nonproliferation anti-terrorism and other aid.

In addition, a multi-million-dollar Millennium Challenge Corporation program is also suspended, State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos told reporters.

The Mauritanian military staged a coup Wednesday in the capital of Nouakchott, having arrested President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi and Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waghf.

The coup leaders have announced the establishment of a State Council, claiming that Abdallahi was no longer president.

The United States strongly condemned a coup in Mauritania on Wednesday, and demanded for the immediate release of president and prime minister of the country.
