U.S. President George W. Bush, together with First Lady Laura Bush, expressed condolences on the death of Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa on Tuesday.
Bush praised Mwanawasa as "a champion of democracy in his own country and throughout Africa." He said that "As president of Zambia, President Mwanawasa launched a sweeping anti-corruption campaign and dedicated himself to improving the welfare of all Zambians," the statement said.
"As Chairman of the Southern African Development Community, President Mwanawasa worked tirelessly to uphold the values of good governance, speaking out against human rights abuses and threats to democracy when many others were silent."
Mwanawasa, who was a lawyer by profession, became Zambian president in 2001 for his first term. He bounced back in 2006 for his second and last term.
Mwanawasa suffered a stroke on June 29. He died early Tuesday at the age of 59 in a hospital in Paris, France.
