U.S. Republican presidential candidate John McCain has spent more campaign fund than he raised in July, according to his financial reports released on Wednesday.
The report submitted to the Federal Election Commission showed the Arizona Senator raised more than 26 million U.S. dollars but spent 32 million dollars in the month, leaving him more than 21 million dollars in the bank at the start of August.
Among all expenses, advertising accounted for the biggest share, at nearly 19 million dollars, the reports said.
His Democratic rival Barack Obama has not yet filed his financial reports, but his campaign said last week that the Illinois Senator had added more than 65,000 new donors and raised more than 51 million dollars in July.
"The 65,000 new donors to the Obama campaign demonstrate just how strongly the American people are looking to fundamentally change business as usual in Washington," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said in a statement.
Through June 30, Obama had outraised McCain about 340 million dollars to 145 million dollars and had about 72 million dollars in cash, about double McCain's total.
McCain hopes he can close the fundraising gap with Obama with the help of the strong fundraising machine of Republican National Committee, or RNC, which raised 26 million dollars last month and has over a million donors during this election cycle.
