The United States welcomed Belarus' release of last two political prisoners in Belarus on Wednesday, saying that paves the way for improving relations between the two countries.

"The release of these individuals, combined with what we hope will be further positive steps, offers the real possibility of a significant improvement in relations between the United States and Belarus," State Department spokesman Robert Wood told reporters.

Bilateral relations between the United States and Belarus soured since Washington dubbed Belorussian President Alexander Lukashenko as "Europe's last dictator," imposed sanctions in November 2007 against Belarus state-controlled petrochemical company Belneftekhim and froze the assets of its U.S. subsidiary.
