The United States said Sunday that it regrets the loss of live during the U.S.-led military operations in Afghanistan and said it is investigating such reports.

"We regret the loss of life among the innocent Afghanis who we are committed to protect," White House spokesman Tony Fratto said.

Fratto said an investigation is going on about reports that nearly 90 civilians were killed in the U.S.-led coalition military operations.

"These reports are being investigated in Afghanistan and we'll look for the results of that investigation," Fratto said.

"Coalition forces take precautions to prevent the loss of civilians, unlike the Taliban and militants who target civilians and place civilians in harm's way," the spokesman said.

If confirmed, this will be one of the deadliest incidents in Afghanistan since 2001.
