U.S. urges Russia not to recognize South Ossetia, Abkhazia |

U.S. President George W. Bush urged Russia on Monday not to recognize Georgia's breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent countries.
"I call on Russia's leadership to meet its commitments and not recognize these separatist regions," Bush said in his ranch in Crawford, Texas.
"The United States will continue to stand with the people of Georgia and their democracy and to support its sovereignty and territorial integrity," Bush said.
Bush made the remarks after Russia's parliament passed resolutions to urge Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia that enjoy close ties with Russia.
The United States has accused Russia of not honoring its cease-fire deal with Georgia and has repeatedly urged Russia to end the crisis and respect Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Georgia's pro-Western government has been a strong U.S. ally.
