Canadian health officials announced Tuesday to recall four more ready-made sandwich brands that may contain tainted meat products after a listeriosis outbreak left at least 12 people dead.
Metro Ontario Incorporated is warning the public not to eat its Fresh 2 Go turkey sandwiches, which were sold in stores in Ontario province, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said in a statement.
Prepared Foods Limited has also issued a warning about its Irving, Sub Delicious, and Needs brand sandwiches. The sandwiches were sold in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, the agency said.
All these four brands of sandwiches contain meat products of Maple Leaf Foods, whose tainted product is linked to the ongoing listeriosis outbreak.
Agricultural Minister Gerry Ritz said Monday that the death toll of the outbreak has risen to 12, with a total confirmed case of 26 and another 29 suspected cases under investigation.
Maple Leaf Foods has closed its factory in Toronto, considered to be the source of the contamination. A total of 220 varieties of products have been recalled.
More than two-dozen sandwich varieties that contain Maple Leaf products have been recalled by Monday.
Listeriosis can cause flu-like symptoms, such as a stiff neck, headache, nausea and fever. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at greatest risk of being infected. Source:Xinhua
