Ecuador on Thursday prohibited its government employees from participating in any campaign for next month's referendum on the country's new constitution.

"It is forbidden for public officials and workers to order the attendance to public events of political support (for the referendum)," Vinicio Alvarado, the chief of the presidential office in charge of public affairs, said in a letter to ministers and state secretaries.

Government sectors should fulfill the regulation, he said.

The measure was aimed at ensuring equity and transparency in the referendum slated for Sept. 28, Alvarado told reporters later in the day.

Some 9.7 million registered voters in Ecuador are expected to cast their ballots in the upcoming referendum.

If approved, the new constitution will allow President Rafael Correa to run for office again and boost state control over national economy, particularly in mining and oil industries.
