New York City residents marked the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina slamming into the Gulf Coast region of the United States Friday with a Manhattan march to support those displaced by the storm.
According to a report available on www.ny1.com, the march through the streets of Manhattan was dubbed "A Call to Action, A Day of Unity," and participants hoped to draw attention to the plight of the working class residents who have been displaced by gentrification.
In Washington Square Park, the Judson Memorial Church hosted a fundraiser for those displaced by the storm.
Meanwhile, a new report released Friday found that nearly half of the 1,000 Louisiana residents who died in Hurricane Katrina were aged 75 or older.
Researchers from the Center for Disease Control and the Louisiana Office of Public Health were cited as saying that many elderly residents were ill-prepared for the aftermath of the storm or too frail to leave their homes. Source: Xinhua
