Thousands of Mexicans took to the streets in the capital city Saturday to urge tougher measures against the escalating kidnappings and murders.
Many demonstrators held pictures of their kidnapped or murdered loved ones, were dressed in white and wore black bands.
Similar demonstrations had begun in other parts of the country, the latest wave of protests against surging crimes in the country, which were triggered by the recent abduction and murder of a 14-year-old boy on his way to school.
The body of Fernando Marti was found in a car trunk in Mexico City on Aug. 1 even if his businessman father had paid a ransom.
Drug murders are a major contributor to the surging violence asdrug cartels fight each other for control of trafficking routes and stage attacks against police nearly daily. More than 2,300 people have been killed in drug murders this year.
Although President Felipe Calderon has made fighting crime a priority and sent 25,000 troops and federal police against the drug cartels after he took office in Dec. 2006, but killings have increased.
This week, a dozen decapitated bodies were found in the Yucatan Peninsula, home to Mexico's most popular beach resort, Cancun.
