The U.S. Republican National Convention organizers have scaled back some scheduled activities with Hurricane Gustav expected to make landfall on U.S. soil early Monday.
The Republicans had earlier planned to put on a "big show" during the Sept. 1-4 event in St. Paul, Minnesota. The following are some figures on different aspects of the convention, though some of them may change due to the expected hurricane.
About 25 miles (some 40 km) of cable have been strung through the Xcel Energy Center complex, the convention site, to handle data, telephone and video feed; visitors to the convention will be using 102 hotels, while 100 Internet bloggers are to be admitted to the convention site; and 500 TV stations will be broadcasting the proceedings from Xcel Energy Center.
As many as 2,380 pledged and 2,220 alternate delegates will be present at the convention, while some 15,000 journalists from around the world are expected to cover the event. About 16,000 convention visitors are expected in St. Paul and its twin city of Minneapolis, with a total of 45,000 people likely to attend the convention, including delegates, alternates, volunteers, media members and other guests.
The U.S. government has granted 50 million U.S. dollars to the St. Paul Police Department to help with security.
Some 50,000 anti-war protesters are to stage a rally on the convention's opening day, Sept. 1.
