Two new hurricanes have taken shape and were expected to hit the U.S. later this week, the National Hurricane Center said on Monday.
U.S. forecasters said that a new tropical storm, coded Ike, formed in the Atlantic and could turn into a hurricane in two days.
Ike, the ninth tropical storm of this hurricane season, was about 2,250 kilometers east of the Leeward Islands as of 2100 GMT and moved at 85 kilometers per hour, said the center.
Another storm becoming Hurricane, Hanna, was roaring over the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos islands on Monday, and was expected to hit the southeastern U.S. coast by mid of this week.
The center predicted that Hanna could "hit anywhere from Miami to the outer banks of North Carolina" and warned residents in the region to raise alert.
Local media reports said that Florida state government has geared up to prepare for the landfall of Hanna and the weather following it, and put resources in place to assist hurricane-hit residents.
The Florida-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration also has took precautious measures, including delaying the move of the space shuttle Atlantis from an assembly building at the Kennedy Space Center to the launch pad.
The U.S. states of Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana were swept by the Hurricane Gustav on Monday, which has caused massive damage and over 80 deaths as it hit the Caribbean region.
