A firefighting plane crashed in Reno in Northern California, killing all three crew members, authorities said on Tuesday.

The plane crashed on Monday after taking off from Reno-Stead Airport, said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The air tanker had been used to drop retardant on a wildfire in the Hope Valley south of Lake Tahoe in Northern California, according to the Reno Fire Department.

The plane crashed after it took off to drop retardant on another fire in California later in the day, the department said.

An investigation by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board was still underway, officials said.
