A passenger plane carrying 136people Tuesday landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after returning to make an emergency landing, authorities said.
The Boeing 737, which was carrying American Airlines' Flight 1586 from Los Angeles to Toronto, took off about 11:20 a.m., but the pilot immediately reported a mechanical problem and asked to return to the airport, according to U.S. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.
"The plane blew one of the tires on the left main landing gear while departing from LAX," Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration said. "That's the gear under the wing."
The plane needed to burn off its fuel over the ocean before making the touchdown, he said.
A large contingent of emergency personnel including firefighters was standing by at the airport while the plane made the emergency landing.
