Three days into a four-day national convention, the U.S. Republican Party is building momentum of its truncated gathering as the party's presumptive presidential nominee John McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin are expected to join the show on Wednesday night.

McCain, who had been engaged in responding to Hurricane Gustav and conspicuously absent from the convention so far, flew in the capital city of Minnesota earlier Wednesday and had a brief but high profile encounter with his vice presidential pick Palin and her family at the airport.

The Arizona senator is expected to be nominated as the presidential candidate of the Republican Party in a roaring roll call which will be conducted late Wednesday night. He will be formally crowned with the nomination on Thursday night when he delivers an acceptance speech.

US Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain (2nd R) and his wife Cindy (R) head in for a shopping trip at The Buckeye Corner in Columbus, Ohio, with running mate Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (3rd L), her husband Todd (L) and their daughters Piper (3rd R) and Willow (2nd L) Aug. 29, 2008.

The spotlight, however, will be on Palin Wednesday night when she addresses the convention in prime time. This will be the first time for the 44-year-old governor of Alaska to deliver a major speech after becoming the surprise pick of McCain's running mate.

"She will speak as a governor, a former mayor and someone with both hands on the steering wheel of America's energy economy," Tucker Eskew, a senior McCain adviser, told reporters.

"She will detail her record of shaking up the status quo in Alaska and standing up to entrenched interests to put the government back on the side of the people," Eskew added.

Among the other speakers participating in Wednesday evening's program are former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. All the three speakers were rivals of McCain in the primary.

According to convention organizers, the speakers' remarks will reflect the convention's overall theme, "Country First," and the touchstone theme for Wednesday's events, which is "reform."
