At least three U.S. Coast Guard crew members were killed when a helicopter crashed in waters about five miles (eight kilometers) south of Honolulu, authorities said on Friday.

Another crew member was missing in the crash that took place at8:15 p.m. Thursday, Coast Guard spokesman Lt. John Titchen said.

The helicopter crashed as the crew was conducting search and rescue drills with a 47-foot motor lifeboat, said Titchen.

The search for the missing man was still underway, he said.
