A total of 295 people were detained across Chile ahead of the 35th anniversary of the military coup that toppled former leader Salvador Allende on Sept.11, 1973.
They were detained during a preventive operation against possible violent events during the commemoration of the military coup.
Fifty of the detained were from the northern part of Santiago, where turmoil is most likely. Violent acts occur every year ahead of the anniversary of the military coup.
Vice Interior Minister Felipe Harboe said Thursday most of the criminals "use the date to get impunity for the crimes they commit," so the police have to enforce security.
In Santiago, the government permitted commemorative events at the Moneda Palace, where Allende died, and at his monument in Constitution Square, but made arrangements to avoid disorder.
There will also be a religious ceremony at Moneda Palace attended by Allende's relatives. Source: Xinhua
