The Bolivian government army on Sunday morning took control in the city of Cobija, capital of the northerner region of Pando, where President Evo Morales imposed martial law after at lest 30 people were killed in a week of political violence.
According to a state-owned TV channel, the Army Forces occupied the police and military units of the sector and that they are patrolling the streets of Cobija.
Health Minister Ramiro Tapia said to the TV channel that "tranquility has returned to Cobija."
Bolivia is in a deepening conflict between President Morales and rebel opposition governors who strongly oppose his socialist reforms. Since Tuesday the president's natives supporters and anti-Morales ultra rightists have clashed off-and-on.
However, Pando's government spokesman Hugo Mopi denied that their city had been occupied by the militaries, saying that they are in the airport and the quarters, but no in the streets.
Mopi said that the citizens of Cobija do not want the Army to enter the city, and that they are not going to obey the martial law, which was decreed on Friday by Morales. Source: Xinhua
