Police in the border city of Tijuana in northwest Mexico took control early Monday morning of a riot in the prison of La Meza, which killed at least two people and injured 19, local media said.
The riot began Sunday at 15:00 local time (2000 GMT) and it was brought under control around 2:00 (0700 GMT) of Monday, after 100 agents of the special teams entered the Center of Social Readaptation (Cereso) in La Mesa, near the border with the United States.
According to the local daily "El Fronterizo", the two people were killed in one cell which was on fire during the riot. Two security agents were among the 19 injured.
The riot erupted after a sub commander and two guards killed a prisoner.
Tens of prisoners' relatives gathered outside the prison demanding the authorities for information.
Director of Social communication of the Public Secretary Ministry of the state of Baja California Agustin Perez said that the prison was under control and he said he would give a press conference on the riot and the performance of the public forces.
During the riot, three prisoners escaped, one of them dressed as a guard, but they were arrested later.
