U.S. President George W. Bush will meet with Pakistan's new president Asif Ali Zardari in New York during the United Nations General Assembly next week, the White House announced Thursday.

The U.S.-Pakistan summit meeting is due on Sept. 23, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters. The scheduled meeting is expected to focus on bilateral relations and war on terror.

The Bush administration, long worried about activities of Taliban and al-Qaida militants in the region between Pakistan and Afghanistan, is looking to Zardari to step up efforts against radical Islamists.

Zardari, widower of slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, won the presidential election in early September.

Pakistan's presidential election was held after former president Pervez Musharraf announced his resignation on Aug. 18 under impeachment pressure.
