President Cristina Fernandez appointed on Friday major general Luis Alberto Pozzi as the Army'sChief of Staff.

Cabinet Chief Sergio Massa made the announcement at a press conference.

Pozzi is to replace lieutenant general Roberto Bendini who has applied for retirement after the judicial process began to investigate charges against him that he had embezzled about 200,000 U.S. dollars from the Argentine Treasury.

If convicted, Bendini could face up to eight years in jail.

The Argentine government said Bendini submitted his resignation Thursday.
