The United States said on Wednesday the passage of the Iraq provincial election law by Iraq's Council of Representatives signals "a maturing Iraqi democracy."
"We congratulate the Iraqi parliament for passing the provincial election law. We think it's a positive sign and certainly shows a maturing Iraqi democracy," State Department Deputy Spokesman Robert Wood told a news briefing.
"We hope provincial elections will be held as soon as possible, preferably by the end of the year," the spokesman added.
Iraq's Council of Representatives passed earlier in the day the provincial election law after months of argument between political blocs.
The United States has been urging Iraqi leaders to pass local election law, saying the elections would be a vital step in building national reconciliation.
Iraq is due to hold provincial elections on Oct. 1.
