U.S. President George W. Bush met with his Lithuanian counterpart Valdas Adamkus at the White House on Monday, with the two sides focusing on bilateral relations and international issues of mutual concerns.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Bush said that he enjoyed working with Adamkus' government. "I am proud of the alliance we've established," he said, pledging that "We'll try to help you as best as we can."
Bush also expressed the hope that by mid-October there will be visa waiver granted to the citizens of Lithuania.
In response, Adamkus expressed appreciation for Bush's support for Lithuania joining NATO. He also called for more cooperation between the countries.
"I hope that United States will be visible in the Baltic region... to show our neighbors that we're definitely not alone, and we are building the democracy together," he said.
Lithuania is member state of the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization since 2004.
