Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Monday welcomed Prince Felipe de Borbon and Princess Letizia Ortiz of Asturias as they began a three-day official visit to Mexico.
During a ceremony at his official residence of Los Pinos, Calderon said, "Mexico and Spain are united in the struggle against organized crime and terrorism."
"Peoples in both countries are also united, among other issues, by history, language and culture, as well as the past and the present," he added.
In response, Prince Felipe said, "Daily links occupy and take both countries to work as exceptional partners."
"Mexico is called upon to boost its role as an engine of progress in Latin America with the support of Spain," he added.
On Tuesday, the Spanish royals are scheduled to attend celebrations for the 243rd birth anniversary of Mexican independence hero Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon in the city of Morelia, capital of the state of Michoacan.
