At least 16 corpses have been found in the northwestern Mexican city of Tijuana, on the border with the United States, a Mexican official said Monday.
The corpses are of 15 men and one women, 12 of which were found near an elementary school in an uptown area and the other four near the center of the city.
Tijuana is one of the Mexican cities with a high rate of violence related to drug and weapons trafficking and kidnapping.
During the last 12 hours, at least 21 people have been murdered in the city and nearby towns of Playas de Rosarito and Tecate.
According to investigators, the 16 corpses were gagged, their hands tied with plastic tape and their heads covered with plastic bags.
Judicial authorities said some of them had their tongues cut off and all had a gun shot wound in the head.
According to local media, at least 3,200 people have been killed in Mexico this year in violence related to organized crime or drug trafficking.
