The United States is planning to reach a free trade agreement (FTA) with Georgia, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative John Veroneau said on Monday.
"We agreed to sit down with them and review what our FTAs entail, so that if there are subsequent conversations about a potential FTA they understand what is required of those. But beyond that, there's no decision," Veroneau said of bilateral talks over the matter.
However, both sides expressed hope to begin negotiations aimed at expanding a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) signed in 1994, according to the top U.S. trade official.
Currently, annual trade between the United States and Georgia amounted to about 580 million dollars, while two-way Georgia-Russia trade totals some 27 billion dollars.
