Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean decided Monday in Brazil to hold an annual summit starting this December to seek a better integration of the region.
Foreign ministers from 33 Latin American and Caribbean nations met in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Monday, to discuss logistical details for the region's forthcoming first Integration and Development Summit.
The meeting is expected on Dec. 16 and Dec. 17 in the northeastern Brazilian city of Salvador, announced Brazil's Foreign Minister Celso Amorim.
"This meeting will be historic... It will be the first time that we meet without being summoned by an external entity," Amorimsaid.
The current U.S. financial crisis will not top the agenda of this first regional summit, "but will have a big role," he added.
