A young man who tried to break into the Brazilian presidential residence and was shot and wounded by guards was in a stable condition after undergoing two surgeries, local media reported Monday.

The attempted intruder, identified only as Denis who was in his20s, was shot in the knee on Sunday by one of the guards when trying to enter the Alvorada Palace in the capital Brasilia.

According to the guards, the man ignored warnings before the guard opened fire.

Denis underwent a vascular and an orthopedic surgeries, doctors said.

"He was very confused and had hallucinations," a doctor said.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his wife were not at the presidential palace during the incident. They had traveled to Sao Bernardo do Campo to cast ballots in the municipal elections.

The Brazilian Army and local police were investigating the incident.
