The United States has promised to provide another 320 million U.S. dollars to beef up the international efforts in the fight against bird flu, a visiting senior U.S. official said Saturday.
Paula Dobriansky, U.S. Under Secretary of State, made the remarks on the sidelines of an international conference on bird flu opened earlier in the day in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, the Egyptian MENA news agency reported.
The additional 320 million dollars will bring to 949 million dollars offered by the United States to the fight against avian and pandemic influenza, said Dobriansky.
On Saturday morning, Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazef inaugurated the sixth international conference on bird flu in Sharm el-Sheikh.
The two-day event was attended by representatives of 124 countries, regions, international and regional organizations, said MENA.
According to World Health Organization figures, the total number of confirmed human cases of the H5N1 bird flu stood at 387 since the outbreak of the virus strain in 2003, among them 245 have died of the deadly virus.
