The post office building in San Gabriel, a suburb city east of Los Angeles, was named for its former mayor Chi Mui Saturday at a dedication ceremony to honor the late Chinese American politician and community activist.
U.S. Postal Service officials were joined by U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff, San Gabriel city officials and hundreds of local residents at the event, which included an unveiling of the building plague bearing Mui's name.
"Every employee at the San Gabriel Post Office is very proud to have this facility pay tribute to former Mayor Chi Mui, who worked diligently to improve the lives of all residents," said Henry Tamayo, acting manager of Post Office Operations.
The U.S. Postal Services issued a special pictorial postmark Saturday to commemorate the ceremony and honor Chi Mui, who died of cancer in April 2006 shortly after being elected mayor of San Gabriel. He was the first Asian-American mayor of the city, where nearly half of its 40,000 residents are Asian.
Schiff, who represents California's 29th congressional district, introduced the bill singed into law by President George Bush earlier this month, recognizing Chi Mui, who spent his life bettering his community as a volunteer and public servant.
