The Colombian House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected a constitutional reform proposal to allow incumbent President Alvaro Uribe to run in the 2014 presidential election.
A ruling party proposal to allow Uribe to run for president again four years after the end of his present term, was defeated in a plenary session of the house, with 75 votes against and 40 infavor.
After the voting, ruling party representatives said they will call a referendum to seek Uribe's candidacy. His current term concludes in 2010.
Uribe became Colombia's president in 2002, and was re-elected in 2006.
Under Colombia's 1991 constitution, the president is elected for a four-year term by universal adult suffrage and may not serve consecutive terms.
However, in October 2005, Colombia's Constitutional Court approved a law allowing presidents to serve more than one term, a move which allowed Uribe to be re-elected in 2006.
