Twenty-six prisoners escaped from an overcrowded jail Monday in the city of Apucarana, in the state of Parana, north Brazil, local media reported.
During the weekend, the prisoners from two cells reportedly dug a 10-meter-long tunnel to escape.
Apucarana official Luiz Carlos Manica said that on Friday noon all cells had been checked and there was no tunnel. On Friday night, the prisoners knocked down part of the wall between the two cells and dug the tunnel.
The strong rain over the weekend also helped the prisoners, masking the digging noise and loosening the earth.
The small prison of Apucarana has 20 cells, which in theory can accommodate 80 prisoners, but there are currently 175 prisoners housed in the jail.
The city has less than 100,000 inhabitants, making it easier for the police to catch the fugitives. Up to Monday afternoon, six of them had been captured. Source:Xinhua
