Panamanian President Martin Torrijos said Wednesday that Barack Obama's election as U.S. president has awakened great expectations in Latin America.
"His election has awakened great expectations in Panama and Latin America, and it is seen that relations between the U.S. and our region will be boosted, which means new cooperation between both sides," Torrijos said.
He also hailed the historical ties of his country with the United States over the past 100 years since it was established as an independent republic in 1903.
Panama and the United States have experienced difficult relations, "but we have always been able to reach consensus, which allowed close cooperation in important areas for both countries," Torrijos said.
Torrijos has sent a message to congratulate Obama, who will take office in January 2009 and become the first African-American president of the United States. Source:Xinhua
