Police have arrested several people following a clash here between police and protesters against the passage of Proposition 8 which bans gay marriage, authorities said on Thursday.
Opponents of Proposition 8 initially gathered at Santa Monica and San Vicente boulevards near downtown Los Angeles Wednesday night to criticize Tuesday's passage of the measure, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
Large groups of demonstrators then fanned out, marching to various locations in the city until early Thursday.
As the protesters marched forward, police officers detained four individuals for allegedly interfering with police by crossing a line of officers. In one case, a demonstrator jumped onto a police car, police officer Sgt. Don Lawrence said.
The large gatherings prompted the Los Angeles Police Department to declare a tactical alert late Wednesday to make additional officers available for service, including some brought in from outside the area, said Officer Jason Lee, a department spokesman.
The protest slowly dwindled down and was officially concluded early Thursday, having been relatively peaceful, despite the arrests, Lee said.
