The United States on Thursday condemned a terror attack in the southern Russian city of Vladikavkaz that killed and wounded dozens of people.

"The United States condemns the heinous act of terrorism that took place today in Vladikavkaz, in the southern Russian region of North Ossetia," State Department deputy spokesman Robert Wood said in a statement.

"We express our condolences to the families of the victims and the government of Russia for the loss of life and injuries that resulted from this terrible act. There can be no justification for such terrorism," he said.

It was reported that eight people were killed and 28 others injured Thursday in a minibus explosion near a marketplace in Vladikavkaz, the capital of Russia's North Caucasus region of North Ossetia.
