The White House defended its planned U.S.-Iraq military pact on Friday, saying it is good for both Iraq and the United States.
"We believe this is a good agreement that serves both Iraq and the United States well. We look forward to the Iraqis concluding the process," U.S. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.
Johndroe made the remarks shortly before the Iraqi government was set to decide whether to accept the pact.
Early this month, the United States presented Iraq with a "final text" of the pact that would allow American forces to remain in the country.
Tensions have been rising as the Dec. 31 deadline to reach agreement on the pact approaches.
The proposed security pact calls for all U.S. combat forces to be removed from Iraqi cities by June 2009 and for all forces to leave the country by the end of 2011, unless both sides agree to an extension.
