A Peruvian road patrol was ambushed by an armed group linked with drug traffickers, leaving three policemen dead and one injured in the locality of Lurico, in Huanta province, southeast of Lima, local police said on Sunday.
The attack took place Saturday night on the highway of Ayacucho, 70 km southeast of Lima, said the police. The drug traffickers attacked the policemen from both sides of the highway, they said.
The aggressors also took away from the policemen four AKM rifles and three guns.
The injured policeman, who was in "grave" conditions, has been taken to the General Hospital of Ayacucho, according to local press.
The identities of the aggressors are still unknown. But a group called Sendero Luminoso allied with drug traffickers was moving around the region when the attack took place.
