Joint military and police operations are underway to identify the armed group which has killed three policemen in the Peruvian region of Ayacucho, said Peruvian Interior Minister Remigio Hernani on Sunday.
An armed group allegedly linked to drug traffickers ambushed a road patrol near the Lurico locality of Huanta province southeast of Lima Saturday night.
Brigadier Luis Tejera, technicians Pablo Chavez and Marco Montero were killed and technician Juan Carazas was seriously injured.
The aggressors also took away four AKM rifles and three guns from the policemen.
Preliminary investigations have pointed to the remainders of the subversive group Sendero Luminoso (SL) which is allied with drug traffickers.
The ambush has been a retaliation of joint actions of the police and the armed forces in Los Valles of the Apurimac and Ene Rivers during the harvest of coca, the raw material for making cocaine, Hernani said.
